Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to protect passwords or secrets.
Does it support Chinese and emoji?
Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding, so CJK characters and emoji round-trip correctly.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It replaces + with -, / with _, and removes padding so the string can be used in URLs and filenames.
Why does my Base64 end with =?
Padding makes the length a multiple of four. It is optional when decoding and is removed in the URL-safe variant.
Is there a size limit?
Only your browser's memory. A few megabytes of text is handled instantly.
